The Westchester Polo Cup is the most historic polo tournament in the world dating back to the late 1800's. The Westchester Polo Cup features a high-goal polo match between England vs the USA and is played on alternating country polo fields with the winner retaining control of the prestigious and elaborate trophy cup. The team that does not win is able to challenge the winner after a 2-year waiting period. It was 2009 that the Westchester Polo Cup was last played on American soil at the International Polo Club Palm Beach in Wellington, Florida. Wellington Polo was honored to cover this tournament and was chosen by the Museum of Polo & Hall of Fame in Wellington, Florida to showcase one of our photos from this event. July 28, 2013:
Team England (28) defeated Team USA (26) 12-11 in Sudden-death Overtime at Guards Polo (UK) in Sunday's long-awaited rematch of the Audi International Westchester Cup. Maintaining the lead throughout most of the game, the USA Polo Team had its closely-felt victory slip through their mallets as John-Paul Clarkin for Team England scored in Overtime, giving England the win.
It will be 2 years before the USA can challenge England in another re-match with the next time being played on American polo fields. James Beim for the England Team was named the MVP of the 2013 Westchester Cup and Polito Pieres' mare of the USA Team, 'Rollinga' was honored with the Best Playing Pony Award.
